Ardnamurchan AD/ Cask Strength 2025 Edition Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml
Ardnamurchan is the most westerly point on the UK mainland β a remote, glacially-carved Highland peninsula on Scotland's west coast where the land runs out into the Atlantic and the nearest significant town is a long drive away on roads that take their own time getting there. In 2014, Adelphi β the respected independent whisky bottler β chose this extraordinary and extraordinarily impractical place to build a distillery specifically because impractical places make exceptional whisky. The peninsula's maritime climate, the Atlantic-driven weather, the mineral-rich local water from the Carnoch River, and the specific microclimate of Glenbeg village combine into what the whisky world has rapidly recognized as one of the most distinctive and the most genuinely terroir-expressive environments for new Scotch whisky production in Scotland.
The distillery is also, by a significant margin, one of the most environmentally serious in Scotland. It runs entirely on renewable energy: hydroelectric power from the local burn and a biomass boiler fueled by wood from sustainably managed local forests. Nothing about the location, the ethics, or the production philosophy is conventional. And the whisky is not conventional either.
The AD/ Cask Strength is the annual release that puts every element of Ardnamurchan's character on full display β no dilution, no added color, no chill filtration between the cask and the glass. The 2025 edition, the third annual release since 2022, draws from spirit distilled in 2016 and 2017, making this the most mature iteration of the AD/ Cask Strength yet released. The blend is 87% peated spirit at 30-35ppm β a medium-heavy peat level that puts this solidly in the range of serious coastal peated whisky without reaching the medicinal extremes of heavily peated Islay expressions β combined with 13% unpeated spirit to provide the fruit and floral softness that keeps the peat honest. Ninety percent matured in ex-bourbon barrels β the primary vehicle for Ardnamurchan's tropical fruit, vanilla, and coastal salinity character β with 10% in ex-sherry Oloroso and PX casks adding dark fruit depth and sweetness.
Master of Malt found "beach bonfire, custard, toffee apples, and black pepper β orange zest, earthy peat, vanilla, orchard fruit, oak char, and rich spice β smoke and peppery spice linger among ripe tropical fruit." The Whiskybase community's most detailed reviewer called it "the most spirit-driven Ardnamurchan" he had tasted β bright coastal character, prominent salty and mineral notes, peat, umami, soy sauce, oysters, more salt, long and spicy β a whisky showcasing the distillery's character "in the best way." The balance between peated and unpeated spirit, bourbon fruit and sherry richness, and the full cask-strength intensity: "a complete success β the balance is perfect."
Origins & Craftsmanship
Ardnamurchan Distillery is located in the village of Glenbeg on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, Argyll and Bute β the most westerly point on the UK mainland, approximately 25 miles west of Fort William, accessible only by narrow single-track roads or ferry. The distillery was founded in 2014 by Adelphi Distillery Ltd β one of Scotland's most respected independent whisky bottlers, known for sourcing exceptional single casks from distilleries across the country β and officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal on July 25, 2014. The Carnoch River provides the distillery's water supply, running from the hills above through the local terrain before reaching the distillery below.
The production philosophy is defined by four commitments that distinguish Ardnamurchan from virtually every other new Scottish distillery: sustainability, traceability, authenticity, and the full transparency of natural production. The distillery runs entirely on renewable energy β hydroelectric power generated by the local burn and a biomass boiler fueled by wood from sustainable local forest management β with zero dependence on fossil fuels for production. Spirit is never chill filtered. No artificial coloring is added. Every bottling provides full transparency of production details: the distillation vintage, the cask types and proportions, and the bottling date.
Production is split between peated and unpeated spirit. The peated spirit is produced at 30-35ppm phenol β a medium-heavy level that produces a specifically coastal, maritime peat character distinctly different from the more medicinal, heavily industrial peat of some Islay expressions. Annual capacity is approximately 350,000 litres of spirit per year.
The 2025 AD/ Cask Strength draws from spirit distilled in 2016 and 2017 β the oldest distillate the AD/ Cask Strength series has yet used, reflecting the distillery's natural maturation progress as it moves through its second decade. The blend is 87% peated and 13% unpeated, matured 90% in ex-bourbon American oak barrels and 10% in ex-sherry Oloroso and PX casks. Bottled at 57.7% natural cask strength without dilution, added color, or chill filtration.
Critics Reviews
Master of Malt (confirmed 2025 release):
"Beach bonfire, custard, toffee apples, and black pepper. Orange zest, earthy peat, vanilla, orchard fruit, oak char, and rich spice. Smoke and peppery spice linger among ripe tropical fruit."
House of Malt (confirmed 2025 release):
"The high strength amplifies the complexity, with smoke and spice interwoven seamlessly through the sweet malt core. Long, warming and intense, the finish leaves impressions of smouldering embers, dried fruit, cracked pepper and a subtle maritime salinity. A lingering richness remains, inviting slow appreciation."
Whiskybase community (most detailed confirmed 2025 tasting note):
"Great powerful young Ardnamurchan, which only benefits from less cask influence. Bright coastal character with prominent salty and mineral notes. Young age is noticeable, nonetheless this Ardnamurchan showcases distillery character in the best way. Malty and mineralic. Light smoke, earthiness, tobacco notes. Also some farmy notes and sweet fruit β pear, melon. With time in the glass more farm, hay and brine. Light sweetness, lemon juice, chili, seafood, sea salt, some notes of smoked fish. Lots of peat, umami, soy sauce, oysters, more salt in the second sip. Long and spicy. This is probably the most spirit-driven Ardnamurchan from more than 20 which I tasted so far."
Whiskybase community (second confirmed note):
"It's a complete success β the balance is perfect between the predominant bourbon which highlights a more mature distillate, and the peat and sherry which give character, depth and fruit."
Whisky Art Blog (confirmed 2025 extended review):
"Smoky tones between the vegetal and balsamic on the nose β a blend of aromatic herbs and roasted pine needles on gingerbread, marzipan, candied pineapple, orange and fresh fruits of apple and peach, meringues and salted caramel. A slight note of nutmeg. In the background, pastry cream, white chocolate, sweet licorice and chalk. Over time, the peat acquires briny nuances while maintaining a forest-like spirit. Ardnamurchan confirms to be a solid distillery full of personality."
Passion for Whisky (confirmed house character):
"Peat smoke from the Scottish West Coast. Sea salt and moss with the fresher scents of vanilla and fresh-squeezed citrus fruit. Maritime peat, ripe apple and pear with warm oak and black pepper. Salty influences of seaweed edged by peat smoke."
Tasting Profile
Nose
Rich amber. The nose opens with beach bonfire β the most immediately and the most specifically coastal Highland peat character arriving confidently at 57.7% cask strength. Custard and toffee apples add the most warming and the most specifically bourbon-cask-derived sweetness. Orange zest and earthy peat build alongside the bonfire character. Vanilla and orchard fruit carry the ex-bourbon base spirit's most generous fruit contribution. Aromatic herbs, roasted pine needles, marzipan, and gingerbread add the most complex secondary layer β the vegetal-balsamic smoke character that the Ardnamurchan peninsula's specific terroir produces. Candied pineapple and mango add tropical fruit depth from the bourbon casks. Salted caramel, pastry cream, white chocolate, and sweet licorice add gentle sweetness in the background. With time in the glass, the peat acquires briny, mineral nuances β salty, slightly medicinal, unmistakably West Highland coastal.
Palate
Full bodied and oily β the most consistently confirmed palate characteristic across every Ardnamurchan AD/ review. The peat arrives with genuine coastal confidence rather than medicinal aggression. Smoke and spice interweave seamlessly through the sweet malt core at full cask strength β the most specifically and the most powerfully integrated quality of the 57.7% presentation. Peach, apple, and pear carry vivid fresh orchard fruit alongside the peat. Umami, soy sauce, and oyster notes add the most specifically and the most memorably coastal and savory secondary qualities that distinguish Ardnamurchan's maritime peat from purely medicinal or exclusively smoky expressions. Sea salt, chili, and a seafood character build with the second sip. The sherry component's dark fruit and dried fruit depth adds richness without dominating.
Finish
Long, warming, and intense β smouldering embers, dried fruit, cracked pepper, and a subtle maritime salinity carrying the close most persistently. The smoke and peppery spice linger among ripe tropical fruit in a finish built for slow, unhurried appreciation. Oak char adds the most structural and the most drying element at the very close. A lingering richness remains β "long and spicy" as the most detailed Whiskybase reviewer confirmed.

A few drops of water transforms the 57.7% presentation β the peat opens into more fragrant, floral, and tropical fruit notes, while the coastal brine and salinity become more immediately apparent. Both neat and with water offer genuinely different and genuinely rewarding experiences from the same bottle.
